What Steps Are Involved in Preparing a Funeral Service?

While every family will have some specific requirements in terms of how they want the funeral for a loved one to be, there are some basic steps involved in preparing a funeral service:
  1. The first calls would have to be made to notify the concerned party/ies and have the decedent removed from their place of death.

  2. A Funeral Director will help with transferring the body from the place where the person died, to the funeral home.

  3. Look for a good local funeral home and meet the funeral director to organize all the ceremonies.

  4. Decide and buy the required merchandise such as the burial vault, urn, casket as well as the memorial items such as the online memorial and the grave marker etc.

  5. The next thing to do is meet with the officials at the cemetery you have selected to choose the interment property such as the niche for the urn, grave the plot etc.

  6. Once the funeral is over, you would have to handle all the legal, financial and administrative tasks.

  7. Before you start on any of these arrangements, determine whether the deceased has set up any instructions or pre-planned their own funeral; in which case you would have to organize everything in accordance with their wishes.

The first call

If the person hasn’t pre-planned their funeral at a specific funeral home, it’s a good idea to call the funeral home/cremation service provider of your choice first; as they will handle all the arrangements for the funeral. This helps ensure you aren’t saddled with additional transportation charges to have the decedent moved to another funeral home.
